ABOUT

Making Conversations Podcast is a project from silversmith Robyn Galway and ceramicist Jemma Millen - both practicing makers and graduates of the applied art department of Ulster University, who both share a love of making and craft.

“Our aim for the podcast is to connect with designers and makers to quite simply; make conversations. As makers ourselves, we are passionate about making craft accessible to as wide an audience as possible. We hope our episodes will give a wonderful but truthful insight into the reality of each craft discipline and the daily working practice of makers, as well as shine a light on the locally produced craft that surrounds us.”

Series One launched in August 2019 as part of Craft NI's August Craft Month and focused on five unique conversations held with local makers. The first series also included a bonus Degree Show episode featuring graduates of the Applied Art department at Ulster University.

“For our second series, we are delighted to share we have been awarded funding from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, as part of their Artist Emergency Programme. This funding means we can bring ten new maker conversations for our second series. We are so excited to bring this glimpse into makers lives within/from NI and beyond.”

For 2021, we have collaborated with the Association for Contemporary Jewellers and Silversmiths Northern Ireland (ACJSNI) to bring three episodes featured around their debut exhibition PINNED. The exhibition has been exhibited at Craft NI Gallery, Belfast and will be exhibited at R-Space, Lisburn as 'PINNED - On Linen' from 7 August until 3 September 2021. Each episode features clips of the participating selected makers of the exhibition, speaking about their work as well as a bonus episode featuring Contemporary Metalsmith Stuart Cairns in conversation with Goldsmith Eddie J Doherty. This collaboration has been funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.

In 2022 we worked with ACJSNI again to produce our fourth series to coincide with their latest exhibition 'Collectibles & Curiosities', an international art jewellery exhibition displayed at Craft NI, Belfast between November and December of 2022. This series consists of 4 maker interviews and 13 maker clips of selected participants of the exhibition across four episodes. This collaboration has been funded by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland.
